Hi novel readers!

In this blog we can discuss the form and content of Mark Haddon's novel from 2003. Hopefully, we will have many creative an interesting discussions on our way towards a better understanding of the book.

Your personal opinions are very welcome here, but remember to be relevant and argue your points in an adult and proper manner. As a rule I (JT) will post questions and statements for you to answer and reflect upon, but you may also start your own discussions. If you do, remember to be relevant and serious.

Good luck!

Topic 4

Christopher is very perceptive to details, but these are not necessarily details that we normally think of as important. Sitting in this classroom now, write a comment where you describe what you see. Try to be Christopher for a few minutes. We will write this together and I will tell you when to stop.

"There are 30 desks in this classroom, and 7 of these are empty. The desks aren’t standing in a logical way, which is kind of confusing. It looks like someone had a rage or something, and threw the desks around all over the classroom. The color is like a strange mix of yellow and brown, which I don’t like. There aren’t many other brown and yellow things in the classroom."

"All of my classmates are writing on their computers. 6 of my classmates are guys, and there are 22 girls. 9 of them have blond hair, 11 have brown, and there are also two ginger-girls. My classroom has 5 curtains, all in different lengths, but in the same pattern. Blue, white and peach stripes. One of the walls in my classroom are made out of bricks. All in all there are 425 bricks, all in different shade of orange. I could go on like this for a while, but i guess I've told you the most important details by now."

  3. My table is next to another table. There are three books laying on the other table. One inside the lower book and one on the top. The books are slightly laying on the line, on the boarder between the tables. It shouldn't. Lines should be perfect lines, and shall not be crossed. It bothers me. When i look at the books i feel like this :/ .

  4. I hate to sit in the back of the classroom, because all I can focus on is the huge, yellow poster on the wall in front of me. To make it even worse, the wall is brown. The poster has drawings of butterflies, a cat, a pig, a sheep, some flowers, a spider, a ladybird and a rainbow in the corner. The poster should be illustrating the word "dignity". I don't see how a spider hanging from a sheep could illustrate dignity. This confuses me.

  5. I'm sitting in a squared classroom, looking at a squared blackboard hanging on a squared wall. Beside it there's two squared speakers, a squared box and a squared lock hanging on it. The keyboard I'm writing on is squared, as well as the screen I'm watching is squared. Even though there are this many squared figures, not everything is squared in this classroom though.

  6. I can see the "entriz" poster in front of me. I d not like it because I don't like yellow. But I do like the little sheep on the poster because its outlining is done in red. I like re. I also like the three math-posters because they are red too. There is a girl who sits in the front of the classroom. I have never talked to her but I like her jumper. It is red. Now the time is 08:31. It is very quiet. Now the time is 08:33.

  7. I see some christmas decoration in the classroom. It makes me really confused and I don't like it. I thought christmas was over? I can see a figure of Santa Clause on the teacher desk, and a christmas heart hanging on the blackboard. I can't avoid looking at it, and it really makes me unfocused. It makes me unsure if it's still christmas, and I really can't remember which month we're in.

  8. I am nervous, there are so many people around me I'm sitting in the middle of the classroom, I am sorruounded by people. They confuse me a lot, just sitting there and writing on their computers. Someone is talking others just are concentrating on the task that the teacher gave us. I like this task because it is something that I like to do, finding details that no one else seem to understand but me.

I really just want to go out of the classroom, I want to be alone, that makes me feel safe. All this people in this classroom are starting to freak me out. I think I'm just going to run out without the teacher seeing me. Goodbye!

  9. My computer has 92 buttons and most of these have letters on them. The letters are all in big writing. Some have numers as well, and in the left corner there is a big one that's lit up. That is the on-button, and it has a special sign on it. On the whiteboard to the right there are eleven small areas with marks left from yesterday. I don't like that, as it annoys me when people are sloppy. Since yesterday the two papers hanging up on the wall have been moved 2 centimeteres to the left.

  10. I'm in the classroom, and my desk seems to be taller than the other desks. But there is a gap between my own desk and Marius' desk, so if I had a pencil, it could fall into this gap, and end up on the floor where no one would ever find it . But I don't have a pencil. I have a rainbow-pen.

  11. I sit next to the windows. I don't like sitting next to the windows, because people in the street can look inside. Whenever I see someone in the street looking at me, I look away and don't do anything. Those people are strangers and they don't have to know what I am doing. Father says I'm being unreasonable, but it's very normal to dislike strangers staring at you.

  12. Wow, look at that bottle of water! It's moving, why is it moving? The table is not moving, my books are not moving, so why is the water inside the water bottle moving? Maybe it is because of me looking at it. It gets scared and tries to run away, but cannot because of the loads of water inside. It's to heavy to move, almost like my teacher Mrs. Jane, who didn't get up after falling on the floor. She actually looks like that santa standing some metres in front of me. I like santa.

  13. There is quite a few things in this classroom I find very annoying. Such as the paper horses we made for English five months ago. Why haven't they gone in the bin yet? Or why are the Christmas decorations still hanging around? I don't like Christmas. Or paper horses. Also, Sondre has worn the same hat for a whole month now. I wonder if he ever washes it?

  14. Right in front of me, or almost right in front of me, i can see a blackboard. Actually two blackboards, with the colour of white. Nothing is written on the blackboard right now, it's quite empty.

  16. I’m in front of my desk in the class right now, typing on the computer. I like it now, because everyone in this classroom doesn’t talk. The only thing making sounds is the typing on the computer. If it’s like this all the time, I’ll maybe start to like my class much better than before. It’s best when everybody just sits there and mind their own things, so that nobody would talk or disturb me. My less smart classmates is best when they doesn’t sit and talk, because then they would seem to be less smart than now.

  17. In clas today we have to describe our clasroom,I don't like our clasroom. It is way too messy, the room is not a perfect square, and the desks are not placed symetrical order.I like that things are in order, that they are logical, therfor I don't like our clasroom. This is what I wrote in the task.

  19. I am sitting in the corner, and I don’t like corners. They makes me feel small, and I am not small. I don’t like the yellow poster on the wall either. Yellow makes me feel sad. It is also quite annoying to see all those desk standing in wrong positions. The whole classroom looks messy and ugly. There is also a strange smell here. I think someone might have been farting, probably for a long time. It is not just the fart-smell that makes my nose scramble. The smell of human is horrible too.

  20. It`s early in the morning. I am sitting by my desk, in a very bright classroom. It feels like sitting under a spotlight, but I think the light is so bright, because it is trying to keep us awake. Every time I go in to this classroom, the spotlight blinds me, but after a few minutes, I become more awake. So it`s sort of helping me to concentrate on schoolwork. Light is actually an electromagnetic radiation, so it is actually science. Who would have thought that something usual as light can be an interesting part of science? It is actually quite interesting.

    1. And I almost forgot to tell you that I am not very fond of the light. The light in the classroom is almost yellow, so I am not sure whether I hate the bright, almost yellow light or I am just accepting it.

  21. When I first walked into the classroom my focus turned to the ceiling, where I noticed one ceiling tile different from the others. Why? What had happened to the original tile? But this wasn't the only thing I noticed. I looked up at the lights. I noticed one of the lights had a different color than the others. And I couldn't help but wonder why. The colors of the room stood out to me. The original room is quite dull and boring, and not to mention old. But all the decorations and posters hung on the walls gave the room some color. They could have saved the yellow though. I don't like yellow.

  22. I do not like the classroom very much. My seat is at in the front right corner of the classroom, right by the door. I'm sitting right next to the wall, which I don not like because the wall is yellow, therefore I can not touch it. There is also a big poster explaining what the word dignity means for our class, that our teacher had us make. It hangs right next to the whiteboard, so every time I look over at the whiteboard I see it. The poster is also yellow, but I don't have to touch it because I can not think of any good reasons why a person would touch a poster.

  23. On the contrary, I think it very likely that you may brainstorm yourself; but the principal thing is to keep cool,”. But how can I keep cool when the lock on the cupboard disturbs me. The cupboard is closed. Freedom of speech is tiny, and the opportunity to speak out is minimal. Why keep something closed for others. The lock drifts my mind away. It took my attention.

  24. This classroom I'm sitting in, is quite oldfashioned with small desks and chairs. The pupils are behaving very strange and are somehow very interested in school ,I don't like any of them. They are all to smart. Sometimes i just feel like screaming alaoud druing one of our lessions, or maybe I would go to the cantine doing som screaming. This school is pretty scary and there are too many people. I must also mention this really anoying girl in class named Gina, she is allways trying to brag when she's speaking English. She is sitting on my right handside, and at the opposite side of me there is an Italian strange boy is sitting named Marius. Just so everyone is aware of it, there are 22 girls and 8 boys in this class, which is not strange at all.

  25. Right in front of me i can see a locker, and its only open when a teacher is in the room. And i wonder why? There is no secrets in there, everyone knows that its only a cd-player and its probably not that expencive. And in fact its pretty ugly and propably bought in IKEA. Its brown and yellow. I HATE THAT LOCKER.

  27. I'm sitting in the classroom watching the clock past 08:30AM. The people in New York are probably asleep because there are six hours behind us, and the clock shows 02:30AM. In Tokyo the clock is 04:36PM, and it's in the middle of the day over there.
Besides the clock hang a very big and yellow posters which representing class. Well, it doesn't representing me, because I hate yellow. I couldn't touch it and have nothing to do with it.
The classroom is very symmetric. There are 144 white plates forming the roof, and has a form as a square with 12 plates in length and 12 in width.

  28. "There are 7 posters in our classroom that we have written matt rules on. 4 of them are blue and 3 of them are red. Which don't make so much sense since red is a girl color so most of the poster should be red and not blue. Sometimes when I’m bored I look at them, because math are more interesting than most of the other subject in school.I like math.

  29. Right now, I am sitting with my feet planted to the ground and my hands firmly grasping the computerscreen. I do this because I don`t like the chaos around me, because there is chaos around me. People have stuff everywhere and there is people everywhere and they dont even sit in a system. there is no straight lines or rows.

The one girl in my room is wearing striped socks, black and white, red pants and a black top. She is wearing her hair in a ponytail. She is wearing pearl earrings. The other girl is wearing a black sweat shirt and a pair jogging pants with white socks. My walls are white. There is a clock hanging on the wall, its grey.
